My top ten personal and work values are:
· Family- It is very important to me that I have a job that does not take away from my time with my family. My main purpose in having a career is to provide for my family, and give my children the best life I can give them. This value will definitely affect my career choice. This is a value that will change as I age and my children grow up. It will still be an important value, but how it applies to my life directly will change as my children no longer need as much attention from me.
· Financial Security – The main purpose for seeking a career is to be able to financially provide for myself and my children. I will not accept a job that does not provide adequately for the needs of my family. This value will change throughout my life. I hope to remarry someday, and at that point I will no longer have sole responsibility for providing for my family, so this demand will lessen.
· Personal Development- I love to find ways to grow and improve. Nothing brings me greater satisfaction. I want a job that will challenge me in this area, and continue to help me develop as a person. This is a value that I think will be pretty constant throughout my life, and may become even more important to me as the demands of the previous two values are lessened in the future.
· Helping Others- I want to feel like what I do is worthwhile and meaningful. If I am helping someone to have a happier or better life, I will be very satisfied. I would love to work in a career where I am making a significant contribution to individuals in their personal lives. I feel successful and happy when I see that I have helped someone. This value will always be important to me.
· Moral values- It is important to me that my work complements my personal moral beliefs. I would not be willing to work in an environment that requires me to compromise my morals. This value will not change.
· Achievement- I am very driven to meet goals. I feel a sense of satisfaction when I have accomplished something challenging. I like to see the finished product of my long-time hard work. I would be very dissatisfied with a job that does not give me this sense of achievement. This is probably something that will always be present.
· Creativity- I want to contribute some of my own uniqueness to my work. I enjoy creating things, especially in the form of written works. I would like to be able to use my creativity to benefit a company, and to help people. This value will probably not change.
· Stability- I enjoy a predictable work environment in which I know exactly what is expected of me. I thrive in a structured environment. This is a personal preference that is ingrained into my personality, and therefore will probably not change, although I can and have learned to be successful in unstructured environments as well.
· Independence- I enjoy work that allows me to make decisions independently and requires little or no supervision. I like to do my work alone, although I also enjoy the opportunity for some social interaction at work. I would not enjoy working in a job that requires a large amount of depending on others in order to complete my work. This is something that probably won’t change throughout my life, although I could grow accustomed to working with people and not be bothered by it so much.
